Hitachi & Adani switch on 1,000 MW Mumbai HVDC infeed, boosts power 50%
Hitachi Energy and Adani Energy Solutions Ltd. (AESL) have successfully commissioned one of the world’s largest high-voltage direct current (HVDC) city center infeeds in Mumbai. This project boosts the power supply coming into the city by 50%, injecting up to 1,000 megawatts (MW) of reliable, secure, and clean power. The Kudus-Aarey connection significantly strengthens Mumbai's transmission infrastructure, serving over 20 million people and enhancing energy resilience. Powered by Hitachi Energy’s Voltage Source Converter (VSC) HVDC technology, the link improves voltage stability and grid reliability. This upgrade is Mumbai's most significant grid modernization in nearly 25 years, supporting the city’s Climate Action Plan and decarbonization ambitions by integrating renewable energy. The project overcame urban constraints with a compact converter station and 50 km of underground HVDC cables.
