Bannari Amman Sugars faces ₹12.7 Cr tax recovery order

Bannari Amman Sugars Ltd has received an order from the District Collector, Erode, directing the recovery of ₹12.72 crore towards alleged tax and interest under the Tamil Nadu Tax on Consumption or Sale of Electricity Act, 2003. The company had previously challenged this levy via a Writ Petition in 2005, which was allowed by the High Court in 2012, subject to other related petitions. While revenue recovery proceedings were withdrawn in 2019 due to pending Supreme Court cases, fresh proceedings have now been initiated by the current District Collector. The company had requested deferral of recovery until the Supreme Court's final decision.
