Biocon Q2 FY27: Consolidated PAT Falls 57% YoY on Biosimilars Margin Collapse
Biocon's consolidated profit for the quarter (including minority interest) fell 57.3% year-on-year to ₹56.7 Cr in Q2 FY27, from ₹132.8 Cr in Q2 FY26, even as consolidated revenue rose a modest 2.2% YoY to ₹4,388.9 Cr (₹4,295.5 Cr). The decline is sequential too — PAT is down 58.6% from ₹136.8 Cr in Q1 FY27 on revenue up just 1.2% QoQ. This is squarely a margin story: net profit margin compressed to 1.3% from 3.0% a year ago and 3.1% last quarter, and consolidated profit before tax (after the exceptional charge) fell 68.0% YoY to ₹54.8 Cr. Standalone (parent-only) PAT, by contrast, was ₹91.7 Cr — higher than the consolidated figure, underscoring that subsidiaries were a net drag this quarter. The bridge sits almost entirely in the Biosimilars segment: its revenue grew 3.2% YoY to ₹2,808.6 Cr, but segment profit before tax collapsed 80.6% YoY to ₹32.5 Cr from ₹167.2 Cr, pulling segment PBT margin down to 1.2% from 6.1%. Group-level cost of materials consumed rose 22.1% YoY to ₹1,669.0 Cr and other expenses rose 15.7% YoY to ₹1,189.2 Cr — both well ahead of the 2.2% revenue growth — while employee costs were roughly flat (-0.7% YoY) and finance costs fell 11.8% YoY to ₹240.1 Cr on continued debt paydown. Syngene (Services segment) profit fell 37.0% YoY to ₹53.7 Cr as its revenue declined 8.6% YoY to ₹832.7 Cr, though it swung from a ₹5.7 Cr segment loss in Q1 FY27 back to profit. Generics was the one bright spot, narrowing its segment loss to ₹30.4 Cr from ₹69.2 Cr a year ago. The ₹6.7 Cr exceptional charge (employee termination costs) was broadly similar in scale to the ₹11.9 Cr and ₹13.5 Cr charges in the year-ago and prior quarters respectively — stripping it out, adjusted PAT YoY decline is ~56.2%, barely different from the 57.3% reported, so this is a genuine operating deterioration rather than a one-off distortion. Management's prior concall guidance (August 2026) had called for FY27 biosimilar margins to stay in the mid-20s with 'meaningful acceleration in H2' from five new product ramps — Aflibercept, Denosumab, Aspart, Ustekinumab and Bevacizumab — and for Syngene to post single-digit full-year revenue degrowth en route to mid-20s EBITDA margins by FY28. This quarter runs counter to the biosimilar part of that guidance: segment profitability moved sharply in the wrong direction just as H2 began. Syngene's print is at least directionally consistent with its guided degrowth. No formal analyst consensus for this specific quarter could be confirmed via search, as results were only announced today (November 4, 2026); vsStreet is therefore unknown rather than assumed, and no management press release accompanying these results was available to cross-check against the numbers. Concurrently, the company disclosed two biosimilars pipeline developments — an expanded market entry for Yesintek and an early launch for Pebrilzo following a patent settlement — alongside a CTO transition (Mandar Ghatnekar's exit effective December 31, 2026, succeeded by Mukesh Rathi from January 1, 2027) and a minor ₹3.04 Cr GST order; none of these directly explain the quarter's margin compression. Going into Q3 FY27, the key marker is whether Biosimilars segment PBT recovers back toward the margins implied by FY27 guidance as the five new product ramps contribute, or whether the ₹32.5 Cr print this quarter is the new run-rate. The net tax credit of ₹1.9 Cr that cushioned this quarter's PAT (versus a ₹38.5 Cr tax charge a year ago) is also not something to count on repeating — without it, the PAT decline would have been steeper.
Key Highlights
- Consolidated PAT (incl. NCI) fell 57.3% YoY to ₹56.7 Cr (₹132.8 Cr in Q2 FY26) and 58.6% QoQ (₹136.8 Cr in Q1 FY27), despite revenue growth.
- Consolidated revenue grew only 2.2% YoY to ₹4,388.9 Cr (₹4,295.5 Cr) and 1.2% QoQ (₹4,336.0 Cr) — the decline is a margin story, not a topline one.
- Biosimilars segment PBT collapsed 80.6% YoY to ₹32.5 Cr (₹167.2 Cr) even as segment revenue grew 3.2% YoY to ₹2,808.6 Cr; segment PBT margin fell to 1.2% from 6.1%.
- NPM compressed to 1.29% from 3.03% YoY (3.12% QoQ); consolidated PBT fell 68.0% YoY to ₹54.8 Cr, cushioned by a net tax credit of ₹1.9 Cr vs a ₹38.5 Cr tax charge a year ago.
- Syngene (Services) PBT fell 37.0% YoY to ₹53.7 Cr on revenue down 8.6% YoY to ₹832.7 Cr, in line with guided single-digit degrowth, though it turned profitable QoQ from a ₹5.7 Cr Q1 FY27 loss.
- Generics segment loss narrowed to ₹30.4 Cr from ₹69.2 Cr YoY, the one segment that improved.
- Standalone (parent-only) PAT was ₹91.7 Cr, above the consolidated ₹56.7 Cr, confirming subsidiaries — chiefly Biosimilars — were the net drag this quarter.
- ₹6.7 Cr exceptional charge (employee termination costs) was similar in scale to prior periods (₹11.9 Cr YoY, ₹13.5 Cr QoQ); adjusted YoY PAT decline is ~56.2% vs 57.3% reported — not a one-off distortion.
