HDFC Life Q2: consol PAT +16% YoY to ₹522 Cr, margins compress, misses Street view
HDFC Life's consolidated net profit for Q2 FY27 (quarter ended September 30, 2026) rose 16.4% YoY to ₹521.6 Cr, with basic EPS at ₹2.41 versus ₹2.08 a year ago, while shareholders'-account revenue (investment income plus the surplus transferred in from the policyholders' account) grew faster YoY at 21.8% to ₹733.6 Cr. Sequentially both lines fell — revenue down 3.6% and PAT down 14.7% from Q1 FY27's ₹611.2 Cr — reflecting a strong Q1 base more than a Q2 stumble, so the YoY read is the one that matters. Against our pre-result preview, which flagged an on-plan PAT band of ₹620–650 Cr informed by Street consensus (35 analysts, Buy-rated, median target ₹760), the actual ₹521.6 Cr print comes in roughly 16-20% below that range — a clear miss on profitability even with double-digit topline growth. The shortfall traces to the shareholders' account rather than the core insurance book: net premium income and the policyholders'-account surplus held up, but the transfer of funds to the policyholders' account — effectively new-business strain funded by shareholders — rose to ₹93.7 Cr in Q2 from ₹54.0 Cr a year ago and ₹34.0 Cr in Q1, eating into shareholder profit. That pushed total shareholder-account expenses to ₹193.1 Cr (+43.6% YoY) and pulled net profit margin down to 71.1% of revenue, from 74.4% YoY and 80.3% QoQ; operating margin (PBT/revenue) compressed similarly to 73.7%, from 77.7% YoY and 82.8% QoQ. This tracks management's own stated FY27 priority of reinvesting margin gains into growth rather than banking them, but the pace of compression this quarter runs ahead of the "maintain current margin levels" framing from the July concall. On the regulatory side, the quarter crystallised a risk our preview had flagged: on 11 September 2026 the GST Commissioner (Appeals-III) confirmed a ₹942.18 Cr core demand (dating to July 2017) plus 100% penalty and interest — our event records show this totalling ₹3,365 Cr once penalty and roughly nine years of accrued interest are included. The company has not provisioned this; consolidated contingent liabilities rose to ₹2,208.7 Cr at quarter-end from ₹1,873.5 Cr at March 2026, and the company has appealed to the GST Appellate Tribunal with no commentary in this filing on timeline. Separately, the Board approved in-principle issuance of up to ₹500 Cr in subordinated-debt NCDs and a GIFT-IFSC insurance office (subject to shareholder postal ballot), alongside allotment of 114,000 ESOP shares during the quarter. No management press release was available with this filing to cross-check management's framing, and the prior guidance on APE/VNB growth and margin stability — the actual scorecard management set — are embedded-value disclosures not reported in this financial-results statement, so they cannot be verified here. Standalone PAT of ₹508.0 Cr (+13.6% YoY) mirrors the consolidated story, confirming the margin compression isn't a subsidiary-level artifact.
