Jana SFB Q2 FY27: Standalone PAT +127% YoY to ₹170 Cr as credit costs ease; op margin dips
Jana Small Finance Bank's standalone net profit (the bank has no subsidiaries, so standalone is the only basis) for Q2 FY27 came in at ₹170.36 Cr, up 127% year-on-year from ₹75.00 Cr in Q2 FY26 and up 9.7% sequentially from ₹155.23 Cr in Q1 FY27. The filing carries no exceptional items in either period, so the growth is on a clean like-for-like base — it is flattered by a weak year-ago quarter when asset quality was still stressed (Gross NPA 2.87% then versus 2.34% now), but the improvement reflects genuine operating normalization rather than a one-off credit. The jump was driven by operating leverage rather than easier provisioning: pre-provision operating profit rose 40% YoY to ₹373.65 Cr, while provisions (other than tax) grew just 6% YoY to ₹203.28 Cr, so profit growth far outran the cost of risk. Net profit margin expanded to 9.15% from 4.83% a year ago and 8.91% last quarter. That bottom-line expansion came even as the bank's own reported operating margin compressed to 19.87%, down from 22.00% last quarter and 21.38% a year ago — income-line pressure persists further up the P&L even as a lighter credit-cost and nil-tax burden (tax was nil in both this quarter and the year-ago quarter) carries PAT higher. Against our pre-result preview, which flagged PAT of ₹160-170 Cr, Gross NPA of 2.3-2.6% and advances growth of 22-28% YoY as the bars to clear, the bank topped the profit range and matched the asset-quality band (GNPA 2.34%) but fell short on growth: gross advances rose 19.2% YoY to ₹35,445 Cr and deposits rose 17.5% YoY to ₹38,221 Cr, both below the Street's growth expectations and, for deposits, below management's own 23-25% FY27 guidance (loan growth of 19.2% sits at the low end of the 19-21% guided band). Cost-to-income came in at 64.33%, inside the guided 63-65% range, and H1 FY27 PAT of ₹325.60 Cr (+84% YoY) is tracking management's 'PAT to be 80%-plus for the year' guidance from the Q1 call. Management's framing in today's release — crediting '80% secured assets with disciplined execution' and cost optimization, with asset quality 'stable' — is borne out by the NPA and margin trend, though the release doesn't address the deposit-growth shortfall; management did flag CASA as 'an area where we are very focused on improving in H2,' consistent with the softer deposit and operating-margin trend. The quarter also carried a senior management reshuffle announced September 28 and the standard pre-results trading-window closure (Oct 1-Nov 30), neither of which affected the reported numbers. Management has pointed to CGMFU-program recoveries materializing in Q3 and continued focus on secured-asset mix and CASA in H2 — both are checkpoints for the next print, alongside whether deposit and advances growth close the gap to full-year guidance.
