SBI Life Q2 FY27 standalone PAT ₹549 Cr, +11% YoY but below Street view; margins compress
SBI Life's standalone PAT for Q2 FY27 came in at ₹549.23 Cr, up 11.1% YoY from ₹494.59 Cr a year ago but down 24.2% sequentially from Q1 FY27's ₹724.93 Cr. That YoY growth, while positive, lands well short of the ~₹700-750 Cr Street consensus flagged in our pre-result preview — a miss of roughly a fifth to a quarter against the range 35 covering analysts were pricing in. Shareholders' account revenue (investment income plus transfer from the policyholders' account) was ₹597.71 Cr, up 13.2% YoY but down 19.2% QoQ. Basic EPS was ₹5.47 for the quarter (H1 FY27 EPS ₹12.70), versus ₹7.23 in Q1 FY27 and ₹4.93 a year ago. Net margin compressed to 91.9% of shareholders' revenue from 98.0% in Q1 FY27 and 93.7% in Q2 FY26. The swing traces to the shareholders' account bridge: a ₹31.0 Cr provision for diminution in investment value this quarter versus a ₹13.3 Cr write-back in Q1 FY27 (a ~₹44 Cr adverse turn), plus a smaller transfer from the policyholders' account (₹241.67 Cr versus ₹457.78 Cr in Q1). Underlying insurance growth was healthier than the profit line suggests: net premium income rose 8.2% YoY to ₹26,877.70 Cr, but new business premium (first year plus single premium) grew just 2.4% YoY to ₹11,351.49 Cr — a softer pace than the 14-15% full-year individual rated premium growth management reiterated on the Q1 FY27 call, and the direct answer to the 'growth test' watch item we flagged pre-result. The Street went into this print expecting SBI Life to defend its 26-28% VNB margin and sustain the 22% YoY profit growth it posted in Q1; FY27 consensus had pegged EPS at ₹29.45 (+19.6% YoY), a run-rate this quarter's ₹5.47 falls short of absent a much stronger H2. This filing, however, does not disclose VNB margin or APE for the quarter — those come in the company's separate investor presentation — so the 'profitability test' watch item from our preview cannot be graded from the statement alone; what the filing does carry is an independent WTW actuarial opinion valuing embedded value at ₹87,350 Cr as at September 30, 2026, with H1 FY27 value of new business at ₹3,270 Cr. Solvency stayed comfortable at 1.97x (versus 1.94x a year ago). None of the quarter's other corporate developments — the ₹1.13 Cr GST demand company plans to appeal, Nihar Jambusaria's appointment as additional independent director, or the joint statutory auditor reappointment — are financially material to the print. No separate management press release was available in our records to cross-check against the numbers. Management issued no fresh guidance in this unaudited-results filing itself; the Q1 FY27 concall guidance of 14-15% FY27 IRP growth and a 26-28% VNB margin stands un-reaffirmed here. The open questions heading into H2 FY27 are whether the investment-valuation drag reverses, whether new business premium growth accelerates back toward the guided range, and whether VNB margin — not visible in this statement — held the 26-28% band.
