Tata Steel partners SMS Group for EASyMelt tech; aims 50% CO2 cut

Tata Steel has entered into definitive agreements with Paul Wurth, S.A (part of SMS Group GmbH) to implement the world's first EASyMelt (electrically-assisted syngas smelter) technology. This innovative technology will be deployed in the 'E' Blast Furnace at Tata Steel's Jamshedpur Works, with the goal of cutting CO2 emissions by over 50% compared to the blast furnace’s baseline operation. This collaboration is a significant milestone in Tata Steel's journey towards achieving net-zero emissions by 2045, one of the most ambitious climate targets in the global steel industry. The partnership follows a Memorandum of Understanding signed in June 2023 and a successful front-end loading study.
