
Tata Steel Wins Stay on ₹493 Crore GST Demand from High Court
Tata Steel Ltd has received a stay order from the Hon’ble High Court of Jharkhand on all further proceedings relating to a ₹493,35,47,131 GST demand, along with penalty and interest, issued by the Commissioner of CGST & Central Excise, Jamshedpur, Jharkhand. The demand was for alleged Input Tax Credit disallowance during FY2018-19 through FY2022-23. Tata Steel had already paid ₹514,19,36,211 of the total demanded GST in the normal course of business. The Company filed a Writ Petition before the Hon’ble High Court on March 11, 2026, challenging the Order passed by the Commissioner of CGST & Central Excise, Jamshedpur, Jharkhand dated December 18, 2025. The Hon’ble High Court has directed the Writ Petition to be listed on April 15, 2026.
