Westlife posts net loss as FY26 one-off drops out; underlying losses narrow sharply YoY
Westlife Foodworld's consolidated (primary) revenue from operations grew 16.3% YoY to ₹746.7 Cr in Q2 FY27 (+1.5% QoQ), but the group swung to a consolidated net loss of ₹2.0 Cr (EPS -₹0.13) against a reported net profit of ₹27.7 Cr (EPS ₹1.78) in Q2 FY26. That comparison is misleading on its face: last year's profit was generated entirely by a ₹52.8 Cr net exceptional gain (a ₹58.2 Cr gain on a store-property redevelopment transaction at subsidiary Hardcastle Restaurants, net of a ₹5.4 Cr investment impairment) — this quarter carries no exceptional items at all. Strip the one-off out and the underlying trend runs the other way: pre-exceptional PBT loss narrowed 83% YoY to ₹2.7 Cr from ₹15.9 Cr, and the adjusted net loss narrowed roughly 92%, to ₹2.0 Cr from an adjusted ₹25.1 Cr a year ago. Standalone, the listed holding company — which only books dividend/investment income from Hardcastle — posted a negligible ₹0.01 Cr profit; it isn't representative of the operating QSR business, and consolidated is the number that matters here. The margin picture is more nuanced than the headline PAT swing suggests. EBITDA (revenue less materials, employee costs and other expenses) grew 39% YoY to ₹93.3 Cr, outpacing revenue growth, which lifts the clean operating margin to about 12.5% from roughly 10.5% a year ago once the exceptional gain is excluded from both periods — a ~200 bps YoY expansion, not the compression a surface read of last year's flattered margin would suggest. Cost of materials did rise to 32.4% of revenue from 27.6% a year ago (+487 bps), the input-cost pressure flagged in our pre-result preview, but it was more than offset by a sharp fall in the other-expenses ratio (39.9% versus 46.0% a year ago) and a modest improvement in the employee-cost ratio (15.2% versus 16.0%). The real pressure point this quarter was sequential: employee benefits expense jumped 10.7% quarter-on-quarter (₹113.5 Cr versus ₹102.6 Cr in Q1 FY27, likely the annual increment cycle) against just 1.5% QoQ revenue growth, while finance costs (₹40.0 Cr, +3.2% QoQ, +10.2% YoY) and depreciation (₹61.9 Cr, +7.8% YoY) kept climbing as the restaurant network expands — together enough to tip Q1's wafer-thin ₹0.6 Cr profit into this quarter's loss. Against our pre-result preview, revenue of ₹746.7 Cr landed at the low end of the ₹745-770 Cr expected range; the "net profit/EBITDA" swing factor the preview flagged as the key uncertainty resolved as a net loss at the reported level even as EBITDA itself grew strongly — on balance a miss against the cautiously-constructive, margin-recovery-watching consensus (18 analysts, 61% Buy, ₹537 target) the preview described. Management gave no formal FY27 PAT or margin guidance at the Q1 FY27 call — only an internal Vision-2027 aspiration of 100-150 bps annual EBITDA expansion, explicitly flagged as not a quarterly commitment — so this print can't be scored against a specific profitability target. On the operational targets that were set (60+ new restaurants in FY27; 580-630 stores by December 2027), this filing is a financial-only regulatory submission with no investor presentation, so store additions and same-store sales growth for the quarter aren't disclosed here and progress is unconfirmed pending the upcoming investor call. No separate management press release accompanied this filing to compare against their own framing of the numbers. Among the quarter's other disclosed developments, a new "Spicy Patakha" menu launch (October 12) and continued promoter-group (ADMAS Industries) share purchases through late September sit alongside the print but don't move the financial numbers.
Key Highlights
- Consolidated revenue ₹746.7 Cr, +16.3% YoY and +1.5% QoQ — topline growth continues.
- Consolidated net loss of ₹2.0 Cr (EPS -₹0.13) vs reported net profit ₹27.7 Cr (EPS ₹1.78) in Q2 FY26 — but last year's profit was entirely a ₹52.8 Cr one-off net gain on a store redevelopment at subsidiary Hardcastle; this quarter has zero exceptional items.
- Stripped of that one-off, underlying PBT loss narrowed 83% YoY to ₹2.7 Cr from ₹15.9 Cr, and EBITDA grew 39% YoY to ₹93.3 Cr — operating performance actually improved year-on-year.
- Sequentially, PAT fell from a thin ₹0.6 Cr profit in Q1 FY27 to this quarter's ₹2.0 Cr loss, driven chiefly by a 10.7% QoQ jump in employee costs (likely the annual increment cycle) against just 1.5% revenue growth.
- Cost of materials rose to 32.4% of revenue from 27.6% a year ago (+487 bps) — the input-cost pressure flagged pre-result — though more than offset YoY by leverage on other operating costs.
- Finance costs rose to ₹40.0 Cr (+10.2% YoY, +3.2% QoQ) as the restaurant network continues to expand.
- Standalone (holding-company-only) results show a negligible ₹0.01 Cr profit from dividend/investment income — not representative of the McDonald's India operating business; consolidated is the primary read.
