BPCL's consolidated net profit fell 21.5% year-on-year to ₹4,863 Cr for Q2 FY27 (quarter ended September 30, 2026), down from ₹6,191 Cr a year earlier, even as revenue from operations grew 29.8% YoY to ₹1,57,818 Cr. Standalone PAT was ₹4,993 Cr. Sequentially this is a sharp turnaround — BPCL had posted a consolidated loss of ₹1,873 Cr in Q1 FY27 (June 2026 quarter) — even as revenue was roughly flat QoQ (-1.1%). Year-ago Q2 FY26 carried a small consolidated exceptional expense of ₹165.87 Cr that had reduced that quarter's profit; this quarter carries none, so the adjusted YoY PAT decline (~23.5%) is marginally worse than the 21.5% reported figure.
Q2 FY-2027 vs prior quarters
The YoY decline is a margin story, not a volume one: refining throughput (10.41 MMT) and domestic market sales (13.47 MMT) both grew YoY, but the company's own ratio disclosures show standalone net profit margin compressing to 3.16% from 5.30% a year ago, and operating margin to 3.94% from 6.09%. Per the company's own note on the results, "the lower profit during April–September 2026 is mainly due to suppressed marketing margin on certain petroleum products which was partially offset by higher refining margin" — stronger refining cushioned but did not fully offset weaker auto-fuel marketing spreads. Sequentially, margins swung from negative (NPM/OPM both negative in Q1 FY27) to positive this quarter, consistent with the marketing-margin recovery analysts had been flagging.
The stock went into the print at ₹281.95, down 10.1% over the past month of trading.
What the summary numbers don't show
EPS ₹11.38 (consolidated, not annualised) vs ₹14.49 YoY and ₹(4.38) in Q1 FY27
The print beat Street: ICICI Securities and Nomura had pencilled in consolidated PAT of roughly ₹4,520 Cr on expectations of improved petrol (~₹2.9/L) and diesel (~₹1.3/L) marketing spreads — BPCL's actual ₹4,863 Cr (consolidated) / ₹4,993 Cr (standalone) came in 7-10% ahead. This also tracks our pre-result preview, which flagged the same ~₹4,500 Cr expectation and spread assumptions; the preview's revenue estimate (₹85,000-90,000 Cr) was well below the actual ₹1,57,818 Cr, likely reflecting a different revenue basis rather than an earnings miss. Management has no formal forward guidance on record, so there is no guidance beat/miss to assess here. Separately, the cumulative LPG under-recovery buffer widened to ₹17,334.40 Cr as of September 30, 2026 (from ₹12,318.52 Cr at FY26-end) — that much LPG revenue remains unrecognized; of the ₹7,594 Cr MoPNG compensation approved for past under-recoveries, only 6 of 12 monthly instalments (₹3,796.98 Cr) have been recognized so far. Outstanding debt also rose to ₹15,245.96 Cr (consolidated) from ₹12,261.86 Cr a year ago alongside continued capex (capital work-in-progress at ₹21,384.95 Cr), nudging debt-equity to 0.16x from 0.13x.
