Vishal Mega Mart's consolidated revenue rose 14.0% YoY to ₹3,398.53 Cr (from ₹2,981.49 Cr), but consolidated PAT grew only 3.7% YoY to ₹157.88 Cr (from ₹152.31 Cr) as net margin compressed to 4.59% from 5.07% a year ago. Sequentially the swing is sharper — revenue fell 8.8% and PAT fell 39.0% from Q1 FY27's ₹3,727.01 Cr / ₹258.77 Cr — but Q1 (April-June) is value retail's seasonally strongest quarter, so the QoQ drop is a seasonality artifact and the YoY comparison is the one that matters: a double-digit topline gain is translating into barely any bottom-line growth.
Q2 FY-2027 vs prior quarters
The margin bridge points to cost, not revenue, as the issue. Gross margin (revenue from operations less cost of goods) came in at 27.96% this quarter, short of the 28.7% level management called "sustainable" on the Q1 FY27 call — a direct miss against its own stated guidance. Employee benefits expense rose 26.6% YoY to ₹222.99 Cr, nearly double the pace of revenue growth and the single largest drag on operating profitability; depreciation (+13.5% YoY) and finance costs (+14.5% YoY) also outpaced revenue as the store and lease base expanded. Management had told the Q1 call it expected "inflation impact to taper in subsequent quarters" — this quarter's cost trajectory does not yet show that happening.
The stock went into the print at ₹87.98, down 14.3% over the past month of trading.
No quantified FY27 guidance. Management expects inflation impact to taper in subsequent quarters. Gross margin 28.7% sustainable if current cost structure continues. Small format expansion to accelerate as 3,000-store opportunity identified. RFID rollout across network will take >1 year, starting with Delhi NCR.
— This quarter: missed
The standalone (core retail) business tells a materially better story than the group number: standalone PAT rose 25.7% YoY to ₹165.18 Cr, more than six times the consolidated growth rate. The gap is the non-standalone entities — Vishal Ecommerce and Airplaza Retail Holdings — which added a net ₹20.85 Cr to consolidated PAT over standalone a year ago but subtracted ₹7.30 Cr this quarter, a roughly ₹28 Cr negative swing that alone explains most of the divergence between the two bases. No Q2 FY27-specific street consensus was found in public previews as of this filing, so the comparison against analyst expectations is unverifiable this quarter. Walker Chandiok & Co LLP's limited review raised no qualifications on either statement. Separately, COO Manoj Kumar resigned on September 11, 2026, about six weeks before this result; the filing itself carries no management press release or narrative commentary beyond the standard board-outcome letter.
W1
Gross margin recovery toward the 28.7% level management called sustainable last quarter, versus 27.96% delivered this quarter
W2
Employee cost growth (+26.6% YoY this quarter) moderating in H2 as management's stated inflation-tapering expectation implies
W3
Direction of the consolidated-vs-standalone PAT gap — subsidiary losses widened to ₹7.30 Cr this quarter from a ₹20.85 Cr net positive a year ago
