Zee Entertainment's consolidated revenue from operations rose 13.0% YoY (and 16.6% QoQ) to ₹2,224.6 Cr for the quarter ended 30 September 2026, led by subscription revenue (up 30.3% YoY to ₹1,332.4 Cr) while advertising revenue was flat YoY at ₹803.0 Cr — despite a 19.6% QoQ sequential bounce — and other sales/services (sports-linked) fell 36.2% YoY to ₹89.2 Cr. Despite that topline growth, consolidated net profit (profit for the period) fell 40.4% YoY and 38.6% QoQ to ₹45.6 Cr (shareholders' share ₹47.8 Cr, after a ₹2.2 Cr non-controlling-interest loss), with EPS at ₹0.50 versus ₹0.79 a year ago. A Prabhudas Lilladher note from mid-August had modelled a far steeper ~70% YoY PAT decline for the quarter, so the actual print, while down sharply, came in well ahead of that specific Street marker — no broader consensus figure was found.
Q2 FY-2027 vs prior quarters
The profit decline traces to margins, not revenue: operating margin compressed to 3.86% from 8.07% a year ago (5.22% in Q1 FY27), and net profit margin narrowed to 2.05% from 3.83% YoY. The driver is a 54.7% YoY surge in advertisement and publicity expense to ₹571.0 Cr — far outpacing 13% revenue growth — even as employee costs and depreciation both declined YoY. Standalone PAT, by contrast, came in at ₹209.8 Cr, more than four times the consolidated number; the gap is explained by a ₹208.9 Cr standalone-only other-income line (versus ₹22.1 Cr in Q1 FY27) that looks like inter-company dividend income from subsidiaries, which eliminates on consolidation — the two bases tell materially different stories this quarter and the standalone print should not be read as the group result.
The stock went into the print at ₹66, down 11% over the past month of trading.
No FY27 margin or revenue guidance given. Management stated 'cautiously optimistic' on advertising recovery (Q2 expected to show FIFA boost), festive season tailwind, and West Asia stabilization. Expects digital momentum to continue; sports profitability timeline undefined.
— This quarter: missed
Management's prior (Q1 FY27) commentary was 'cautiously optimistic' on an advertising recovery helped by a FIFA-linked boost and a coming festive tailwind, with no formal FY27 revenue or margin guidance on record. The sequential ad-revenue bounce (+19.6% QoQ) and continued subscription/digital momentum are consistent with that framing, but the sharp margin compression and near-40% YoY profit decline sit below the optimistic tone, since the step-up in A&P spend behind it wasn't previously flagged — on balance this reads as a miss against the qualitative outlook. The festive-season tailwind management pointed to falls in Q3 (Oct–Dec), not this quarter, so it remains untested; no management press-release commentary was available to cross-check framing. During the quarter the final evidentiary hearing in the JioStar/ICC arbitration (~$1,097 Mn claim) concluded with post-hearing briefs filed, and management maintains the claim is unfounded with no provision taken. Separately, the company closed its trading window ahead of results, appointed Suraj Singh as Business Head of Zee Studios, and received an MCA information notice — none of which feed into this quarter's P&L.
W1
Whether the festive-season ad tailwind management flagged materialises in Q3 FY27 (Oct-Dec) — Q2 ad revenue was still flat YoY (₹803.0 Cr) despite the expected FIFA-linked boost
W2
Whether the 54.7% YoY jump in A&P spend (₹571.0 Cr) recedes next quarter or becomes a sustained cost base — determines if Q2's margin compression (OPM to 3.86%) was one-off
W3
Next steps in the JioStar/ICC arbitration (~$1,097 Mn claim) now that post-hearing briefs have been filed
