Dollar growth steady, margins under watch—HCL targets guidance as AI accelerates

With Advanced AI capturing momentum but still sub-5% of revenue, HCL faces a growth narrative test: can dollar revenue stay on the 1-4% FY27 track? Street is divided; price action reflects skepticism.

What matters this quarter

HCL's challenge is straightforward: validate FY27's 1–4% constant-currency revenue growth guidance against a tide of macro headwinds and price erosion. In Q1 FY27 (ended June 30, 2026), the company delivered USD revenue of $3.65 billion—down 0.9% sequentially, up a modest 3% year-over-year. EBIT margin recovered to 16.9%, up 39 basis points QoQ. For Q2 (ended September 30, 2026), the Street expects on-plan execution: dollar revenue holding to low single-digit YoY growth (1–2% range implied by FY27 guidance), EBIT margin stable near the 17.5% midpoint of guidance, and continued traction in Advanced AI—now 62% YoY in constant currency, though still <5% of quarterly revenue.

USD revenue expectation

~$3.65–3.70 Bn

tracking 1–4% FY27 CC guidance; modest QoQ stability

EBIT margin target

~17.3–17.7%

within 17.5–18.5% FY27 range; demonstrates execution

Advanced AI revenue

~₹150+ Cr

expecting 10%+ QoQ momentum; remains <5% of total

Attrition rate

~13–14% annualized

talent cost control key to margin defense

A strong quarter would show dollar revenue at or above expectations, margin above 17.5%, and visibility into sustained AI upselling—especially from the new HCLTech Pulse unit launched September 17. A weak print would be USD growth dipping below 1%, EBIT margin compressing below 17%, or guidance revision citing macro uncertainty or deal slippage. Watch also for commentary on FII outflows (FII ownership dropped 61 bps QoQ to 14.9%) and any disclosure on the Robotiq.ai integration (announced September 28 for EUR 9 million).

On-track?

HCL is tracking FY27 guidance to date. Q1 delivered against the plan (revenue up YoY, margin improving QoQ). The company has not revised guidance, which suggests management confidence in the 1–4% CC growth and 17.5–18.5% EBIT margin band. However, the stock's 32% decline from its all-time high (₹1,780.1 in Feb 2026) to ₹1,201.9 today signals the Street is skeptical on execution or valuation—or both. The Street debate hinges on whether HCL can pivot its AI services upsell into material margin expansion within this guidance range, or whether the company will face structural headwinds (large-deal delays, captive consolidation, talent cost inflation) that force a guide cut.

What the Street says

Since last quarter

Material filings & business updates
  • 1 · Robotiq.ai acquisition (Sept 28)

HCLSoftware acquired the Croatian RPA/AI platform provider for EUR 9 million to bolster the HCL UnO Agentic AI platform. This is a bolt-on in the AI/automation space—material for product positioning, not material for Q2 P&L. Watch for management color on integration pace and upsell potential.

  • 2 · HCLTech Pulse launch (Sept 17)

New business unit targeting fast-scaling enterprises ($500M–$5B revenue). Designed to accelerate AI-led transformation. Early-stage; Q2 contribution will be immaterial. But signals intent to own the mid-market AI play.

  • 3 · Insider trading window closed (Sept 17)

Standard pre-result blackout. No insider activity disclosures to watch.

  • 4 · Deal wins (Sept 22, Sept 21, Sept 15, Aug 27)

M Group (UK infra modernization), Wacker Chemie AG (GCC in Pune), PLM services leadership (Everest Group), ISG Procurement Services leader status. Routine deal announcements; collectively show sales pipeline traction but don't move Q2 revenue.

  • 5 · ESG milestone (Aug 26)

Achieved 2030 emissions reduction targets 4 years early. Positive on sustainability posture, not on earnings.

  • 6 · FII outflows (prior quarters)

FII ownership fell from 16.22% (Q3 FY26, Sept 2025) to 14.90% (Q1 FY27, June 2026). A 61 bps decline. Reflects broader IT sector sentiment; watch for stabilization or further outflows in Q2.

The setup

HCL is a credible story in AI services and automation, but the market is pricing in execution risk and valuation skepticism. The stock has re-rated lower despite beating Q1 earnings, and the Street is split—split enough that Q2 results will be a catalyst either way. Revenue in-line with guidance, margin intact, and forward color on AI adoption rates will likely stabilize sentiment. A miss or a guide cut will confirm the bears.

Three things to watch on result day

  • 1 · Dollar revenue trend

Is USD revenue within the 1–4% FY27 growth band, or slipping below? QoQ stability is the floor expectation. Sequential weakness would trigger a guide review question.

  • 2 · EBIT margin: 17.5% or bust?

Can HCL defend the midpoint of its 17.5–18.5% FY27 guidance, or is attrition/wage inflation compressing margins below 17.3%? Margin integrity is the true test of execution.

  • 3 · AI upsell color and forward guide

Will management guide FY27 guidance upward on AI momentum, downward on macro caution, or hold steady? This signal will determine if the stock reprices higher (bull case) or stabilizes (base case).

HCL Technologies is facing a valuation reset and a Street belief test. The company has guided cautiously (1–4% FY27 growth), maintained that guidance in Q1, and backed it with a credible AI strategy. But the stock's 32% washout from ATH and the split analyst consensus (Neutral, median target ₹1,268) suggest the market wants proof of margin defense AND evidence that AI can scale materially beyond 5% of revenue. Q2 is that proof point. Revenue in-line with guidance, margin at or above 17.5%, and management's willingness to hold or raise the FY27 guide will begin to restore confidence. A miss invites further downside.
