MRPL Q2: Refining Margins Recovery in Focus After Operational Dip

The Mangalore refinery reports into a backdrop of Q1 operational weakness and a late-quarter fire incident. Street expects margin recovery, while crude processing capacity and the GRM environment shape the outlook.

08 Oct 2026 · 3 min read

MRPL's Q2 FY27 result comes on the back of a Q1 that surprised the headline but disappointed the core. While consolidated PAT hit ₹945.68 Cr, EBITDA slid 26% sequentially after exceptional gains (primarily a ₹471.76 Cr reversal item), signaling underlying margin pressure. The real test for Q2 is whether gross refining margin (GRM)—the yield on crude processing—has stabilized or continued to weaken. FY26 saw GRM recovery to $9.22/bbl; crude prices and global refining supply in July–September will shape whether Q2 can hold or regain that run-rate.

What to Expect

Revenue (standalone estimated)

~₹26–28k Cr

On-run crude processing ~4.2M tonnes; pricing reflects Sep 2026 crude/product environment

Operating margin (GRM proxy)

TBD — watch the trend

Q1 FY27 saw operational EBITDA decline despite headline profit lift from one-time gains

PAT (headline, if Q1 margins hold)

₹400–600 Cr range estimate

Depends on GRM recovery vs Q1's ~₹474 Cr core operating loss before exceptional

Capacity utilization

~105–108% run-rate

Refinery typically sustains above rated 15M tonne/year capacity; Sept 30 fire no impact on Q2 run-rate

A strong Q2 print: GRM recovers to $8.50+/bbl; PAT lands in the ₹600–750 Cr range on sustainable margins; management signals full-year guidance intact and fire containment confirmed. A weak print: GRM contracts further ($7.50–8.00/bbl); PAT dips below ₹400 Cr; guidance is revised down on fire-related near-term production loss or prolonged margin pressure.

On Track?

MRPL ended FY26 on a strong note (PAT ₹1,931 Cr, GRM $9.22/bbl), but Q1 FY27 showed two signals: headline profit held via exceptional items, while core operations weakened. The company has not issued a full-year FY27 guidance; Q2 will be read for whether Q1 weakness is cyclical (margin compression in a soft refining environment) or structural. Year-to-date (H1 FY27), the trajectory has been modestly above last year (Q1 FY26 was ₹45 Cr loss; Q2 FY26 was ₹639 Cr profit), but the mix (reliance on one-time items in Q1) raises the bar for Q2 to prove run-rate stability.

What the Street Says

Since Last Quarter

Recent Events & Filings
  • 1 · Fire Incident — Coker Hydrotreater Unit (Sep 30)

Cold Separator rupture triggered a fire in the CHT unit; one fatality, multiple injuries. The unit was isolated; the refinery's remaining units continued operations. MRPL cancelled three spot export tenders (diesel, jet fuel, reformate) to prioritize domestic supply. On-the-ground reports: no significant impact expected on Q2 production (fire on last trading day of quarter); however, the incident is flagged for forward guidance and any revision to FY27 run-rate capex or maintenance.

  • 2 · CENVAT Credit Win — High Court Dismissal (Oct 1)

MRPL won a High Court case against the Department of Revenue on a ₹217.77 Cr CENVAT credit dispute. The court dismissed the Department's appeal, upholding a prior CESTAT order in MRPL's favour. This is a financial/tax win, not operational, and is not a Q2 exceptional item—it may affect FY27 consolidated tax expense or be recognized as a reversal in a future quarter depending on accounting treatment.

  • 3 · Auditor & Board Changes (Aug–Oct)

New external auditors appointed (Ram Raj & Co., A Raghavendra Rao & Associates, Sep 9). New Non-Official Directors and Government Nominee Directors appointed (Aug–Oct). Trading window closure announced (Sep 23) for results. Routine governance updates; no operational impact on Q2.

MRPL's Q2 FY27 result is the quarterly checkpoint on margin sustainability. After Q1's operational slide masked by exceptional gains, Q2 must answer: is the GRM environment recovering, flat, or worsening? Crude processing is likely on-plan, but the refining margin is the whole story. The Coker Hydrotreater fire on Sep 30 is a containment win (not a Q2 production loss), but signals operational risk that the Street will probe on the call.

Watch three things: (1) GRM reported and management's forward view — does the company expect margin recovery in H2 or is the cycle softening further? (2) Q2 PAT and the bridge from headline to core — any exceptional items in Q2 that obscure operating performance? (3) Fire damage assessment & capex impact — is the CHT unit back online, and does MRPL revise its FY27 capex or maintenance schedule?
