Auto-ancillary core metrics (revenue +35% YoY, adjusted PAT +31% YoY, both beating street) are strong, but OPM compressed to 23.0% from 25.1% a year ago and slipped further sequentially — missing management's own 'margin recovery from Q2' guidance — so quality is capped below very_good.

SONA BLW PRECISION FORGINGS · Q2 FY-2027 · THE VERDICT

Record Revenue Masks the Margin Crunch That Reshaped the Quarter

Sona delivered its highest-ever revenue and profit, but EBITDA margin compressed 230 basis points to land at the lower end of guidance. Management's promised recovery didn't show—and the reason reveals an unfinished shift in the business itself.

Sona's Q2 FY-2027 print reads like a home run on the headline—the company hit its highest-ever revenue (₹1,546 Cr, +35% YoY), EBITDA (₹356 Cr, +23%), and PAT (₹223 Cr, +31%). But beneath those numbers sits a quarter that exposed the friction of a business mid-transition. EBITDA margin fell to 23%, down 230 basis points from 25.3% a year ago, and stayed pinned at the lower end of management's 23–25% FY27 guidance band. That margin compression is the real story: it tells you that the shift into EV traction motors, suspension, and lower-cost products is happening faster than the pricing and cost-pass-through can keep pace. Growth is real. Profitability is real. But the quality of that profit is being diluted by a mix that management can see, but can't yet reverse.

Where the profit came from — and where it didn't

The headline PAT of ₹223 Cr is organic—no one-time gains or material MTM swings to strip out. But the margin is the tell. Revenue grew 35% YoY, PAT grew 31%, but EBITDA margin shrunk. The gap tells you: volume lifted profit, but the product mix and cost pressures chewed into percentage return. Management attributed the margin squeeze to two factors: (1) a deliberate shift in product portfolio toward traction motors and EV suspension systems (structurally lower margin than legacy ICE differentials and gearboxes), and (2) inflation and freight headwinds that haven't yet been passed through to customers. The company acknowledged that cost pass-throughs were expected in Q2; they didn't fully materialize. West Asia geopolitical tension added to freight volatility, keeping the margin under pressure.

What changed on this call

Strategic shifts and new clarity
  • EV penetration quantified at 51% (vs ~30% one year ago); BEV revenue now ₹1,042 Cr H1

  • EPIC mobility programs now tangible: 75 programs across 37 customers, 44 in production, 31 pending

  • Margin recovery narrative delayed: Q1 promised 'Q2 onwards recovery,' Q2 delivered 23% (no recovery yet)

  • Denso JV1 carve-out targeted for Dec 2026 closure; JV2 formation 1H CY27 (timelines now critical near-term catalysts)

  • Robotics aspiration crystallized: ₹62 Cr capex committed, 4% of ₹250 Bn order book allocated, but inflection timeline 'hard to predict'

The bull-bear ledger

  • Highest-ever revenue, EBITDA, and PAT confirm scale and execution

  • EV penetration now 51% of auto revenue, growing 129% YoY—structural shift is real and accelerating

  • Order book ₹251 Bn provides 36-month visibility; ₹36 Bn order wins (3rd highest ever) show customer traction

  • EPIC programs quantified (75 across 37 customers, 44 producing) reduce long-term execution risk

  • Free cash flow ₹446 Cr H1 (>50% vs FY26 equivalent) funds growth capex without dilution

  • EBITDA margin compressed 230 bps to 23%, at lower band of guidance—cost pass-through lags inflation

  • Product mix shift to traction motors and EV suspension (lower-margin) masks profitability improvement

  • Margin recovery timeline vague; management deferred to later in FY27 after Q1 call promised Q2 onwards recovery

  • Denso JV closures (Dec 2026, 1H CY27) now critical catalysts; delays would push revenue into FY28

  • Robotics inflection timing unknown; management declined to commit, citing S-curve unpredictability

  • Eastern markets now 2/3 of revenue (up from 1/3 one year ago); geographic concentration rising

Risks, ranked by how much they should concern a holder

Key downside scenarios

Margin recovery timeline opaque

High

Q1 called for 'Q2 onwards recovery'; Q2 delivered 23% (vs 25.3% prior year). Recovery now pushed to later in FY27. If traction motors and EV suspension remain lower-margin and inflation persists, FY27 guidance (23–25%) risks sitting at 23% for the full year. Re-rating risk if consensus had assumed margin recovery by Q3.

Denso JV execution delays

High

JV1 carve-out (high-voltage systems) targeted Dec 2026; JV2 formation 1H CY27. Both are material revenue sources (estimated ₹900 Cr by FY27 end on analyst commentary). Legal delays or carve-out complexity could push revenue recognition into FY28, derailing FY27 growth expectations.

Supply chain stress from traction motor surge

High

Traction motors grew ~50% QoQ. While management claims capacity exists, rare earth magnet and copper supply constraints are real. Extended lead times or allocation could choke production and miss customer wins.

Robotics inflection timing unproven

Medium

Management committed ₹62 Cr capex but declined to forecast deployment timeline. Vivek acknowledged S-curve unpredictability and said 'I don't know.' If adoption lags or costs don't fall as expected, ₹62 Cr capex becomes stranded capital and the 10x-in-10-years aspiration stalls.

Geographic concentration in Eastern markets

Medium

Eastern markets now 2/3 of revenue (up from 1/3 one year ago). Heavy dependency on India OEMs (Tata, etc.) and China EV players for traction motors. A slowdown in India auto sales or consolidation among China EV OEMs could compress wallet share and margin simultaneously.

Inflation and West Asia geopolitical stress persist

Medium

Steel, copper, and oil derivatives are up; freight rates doubled QoQ per management. Cost pass-through is lagging. If West Asia tensions escalate or commodity prices don't normalize, the margin compression could extend into H2 FY27.

How the street is positioned

Sona trades at ₹890.5, just 0.95% below its all-time high, and sits comfortably above its 20-day, 50-day, and 200-day moving averages (₹808.63, ₹806.79, and ₹643.41, respectively). The 52-week range is ₹437.7–₹899, so the stock has recovered 103.45% from its low and is trading near the top. RSI of 67.8 sits in neutral territory—not yet overbought, but running hot. Volume is increasing, signalling active participation into the highs.

Ownership is stable but shifting slightly. FII holdings fell 0.09 percentage points to 23.61% (from 23.70% in Q4 FY26), while DII added 0.15pp to 41.61%. The FII pullback is modest, but it hints that foreign institutions may be taking some profits or waiting for a pullback. Promoters remain steady at 28.01%. The absence of any reported bulk or block deals near the highs is notable—no insider selling pressure.

The market verdict on the Q2 print is bullish, but with caution. The stock rallied into and through the earnings release, landing near ATH. But the proximity to the highs—combined with FII trimming and RSI near neutral—suggests the market has already priced in most of the upside from record revenue and the EV growth story. The margin compression and delayed recovery narrative haven't yet triggered a selloff, likely because the order book and EPIC ramp narrative is still intact. A re-rating down would require either (1) a guidance cut on FY27 margins, (2) a delay or miss on Denso JV closures, or (3) a slowdown in EPIC program ramps. The street is not yet pricing in that risk.

The debate

What to watch next

Three concrete things that resolve the debate by Q3/Q4 FY27
  • 1 · Denso JV1 carve-out closure in Dec 2026

If the high-voltage systems JV closes on time, it unlocks revenue recognition and resets the growth narrative for FY28. A delay past Jan 2027 signals carve-out complexity and pushes the inflection to FY28. This is a binary gate.

  • 2 · Q3 FY27 EBITDA margin trajectory

The key metric to track. Is margin recovering toward 24–25% (supporting the bull thesis), or staying at 23% (suggesting the mix shift is persistent and cost pass-through is stalled)? Q3 will show whether the recovery narrative from Q1 is still valid or if guidance is at risk of being cut.

  • 3 · EPIC program production ramp confirmation

Management claims 44 of 75 programs are now in production. Watch for evidence in FY27 Q3/Q4 results: are program shipments accelerating, or is the 'in production' state just tooling and low-volume trials? Revenue contribution should become visible by H2.

Sona BLW closed Q2 FY-2027 with the highest revenue and profit in company history, but sat the margin squeeze front and center on every analyst's scorecard. The message is clear: growth is real, EV is real, the order book is real. But the profitable growth—the quality of that profit—is not yet assured. Management's margin recovery narrative has slipped from Q2 to 'later in FY27,' and the Denso JV closures (Dec 2026 / 1H CY27) are now the near-term gate that reset execution credibility.

The single number to track from here is Q3 EBITDA margin. If it expands toward 24–25%, the bull thesis is intact and the stock could re-rate higher. If it stays at 23% or compresses further, margin recovery is now a FY28 story, and that re-rating is priced in for later. For a holder, that distinction is the difference between a 'Hold' rating that becomes a 'Buy' and a 'Hold' that drifts toward 'Reduce.'
