Stabilising Margins in a Margin Call
Q2 will test whether TTML can hold the EBITDA gains that emerged in FY26, as revenue stabilises after the AGR relief windfall. The real question: any path to profitability beyond exceptional items?
What to expect
~₹310 Cr
Q1 FY27 was ₹303.90 Cr (+6.1% YoY); Q2 FY26 was ₹286.13 Cr. Street watches for continued stability.
~35%
FY26 full-year EBITDA ₹624.94 Cr on ₹1,167.76 Cr revenue (53.5%); Q2 FY26 was 35.1%. Hold this level = execution.
₹80–100 Cr
Q1 FY27 was ₹72.15 Cr. Absolute loss levels remain structural; the debate is narrowing vs widening.
Profitability trajectory
FY26 net loss ₹215.30 Cr benefitted from ₹666.70 Cr AGR write-back. Underlying ops still loss-making. Q2 must show loss-narrowing momentum.
A strong quarter: Revenue grows YoY (repeat of Q1's +6.1%); EBITDA margin holds 35%+; net loss narrows below ₹70 Cr (vs Q1's ₹72.15 Cr); any management commentary on return to profitability or subscriber stabilisation. A weak quarter: Revenue declines YoY; EBITDA margin compresses below 33%; losses widen; no visibility on profitability or continued competitive pressure from larger telcos evident in subscriber loss.
On track to guidance?
TTML does not appear to have issued specific FY27 guidance in public filings, and prior-year guidance is not evident in recent disclosures. The path is defined by the AGR relief (exceptional write-back of ₹666.70 Cr in FY26) and the structural need to narrow losses through EBITDA growth. Q1 FY27's +6.1% revenue growth is the first positive signal in a multi-year decline—Q2 will test whether this stabilisation holds or reverts. The full-year trajectory hinges on whether operating EBITDA can translate to a net profit as debt/interest burdens ease.
What the Street says
Since last quarter
Five material filings since Q1 FY27 earnings (July 22):
1 · Director resignation (Oct 14)
Nalin Rana resigned from the Board effective Oct 22—the same day Q2 results are approved. Routine exit but timing amid a distressed turnaround warrants noting. No successor announced yet.
2 · Statutory auditor change (July 22)
M/s T. P. Ostwal & Associates LLP appointed as new statutory auditors, replacing prior firm. Governance refresh; no audit qualifications flagged.
3 · CGST penalty halved (June 24)
CGST penalty reduced from ₹36.14 Cr to ₹7.57 Cr by Commissionerate order. Positive regulatory outcome; frees up cash and reduces contingent liabilities.
4 · Tata Communications partnership (July 28)
Strategic collaboration launched: TTBS (Tata Tele Business Services) + Tata Communications for SMB AI infrastructure. Small-scale but signals pivot toward high-margin enterprise/AI services to offset mass-market telecom decline.
5 · Senior management changes (July–Sept)
New Senior Management Personnel appointed (Kushalraj Sonigda, July 22); Pravir Dahiya superannuated (Sept 30). Routine turnover in a shrinking business.
The setup
TTML enters Q2 with one near-term tailwind and one structural headwind. Tailwind: AGR relief has already cleared the worst of the legacy liability (₹615.42 Cr paid in FY26); balance-sheet relief is here. Q1 FY27 revenue growth (+6.1% YoY) suggests the company may be stabilising after years of decline, and EBITDA margins near 35% are workable for a regional telecom. Headwind: Underlying profitability remains elusive. The company reported net losses in every quarter of FY26 and Q1 FY27 despite decent EBITDA—interest burden, depreciation, and operating costs eat the margin. No clear subscriber base or market-share data in recent disclosures. Analyst coverage is thin and mixed (HDFC: Sell; one Hold). The stock is down 88% from its all-time high, pricing in structural decay.
On result day, watch for
1 · Revenue trajectory
Does Q2 repeat Q1's +6.1% YoY growth, or slip back into decline? Flat-to-up ≥5% is the on-plan scenario. Any decline signals the stabilisation narrative has broken and losses will widen.
2 · EBITDA margin sustainability
The 35% margin is the stock price's redemption—prove costs are under control. A slip below 33% is a red flag for operational deterioration; a hold or beat shows the turnaround is real.
3 · Path to profitability
Does management outline any timeline or milestones to reach breakeven? Without this, the narrative is 'shrinking gracefully,' not a turnaround. Loss narrowing (vs Q1's ₹72 Cr) is the minimum bar.
4 · Subscriber or operational metrics
TTML rarely discloses subscribers in investor releases, but if FY27 marks the inflection from decline to stabilisation, any comment on stabilised churn or new customer wins is material.
5 · Debt and interest burden
AGR relief is done; now the company must shrink absolute debt or grow its way to EBITDA coverage. Watch for debt/leverage ratios and interest expense trends.
TTML's turnaround bet hinges on whether Q2 sustains the revenue stabilisation and margin hold that Q1 FY27 hinted at. The AGR relief is in the rearview; now the company must prove that underlying operations (subscription revenue, cost discipline, subscriber retention) are durable, not just exceptional relief. Street coverage is thin and pessimistic (Sell on one side, Hold on the other), so the result is unlikely to move consensus—rather, it will determine whether the bin is 'turnaround' or 'eventual consolidation/distress.' Revenue trend and loss-narrowing momentum are the two numbers that matter.
Expect Q2 revenue near ₹310 Cr (steady vs Q1) with EBITDA margin holding at 35%, and losses in the ₹80–100 Cr band. A beat on all three, plus credible profitability guidance, could rekindle the turnaround narrative; a miss on any one confirms the decay is structural. Board-approved results come Oct 22 post-market.

Tata Teleservices (Maharashtra) reported a standalone net loss of ₹59.20 Cr for Q2 FY27 (quarter ended September 30, 2026), narrowing 81.6% from a ₹320.82 Cr loss a year ago and 17.9% from the ₹72.15 Cr loss in Q1 FY27. Revenue from operations grew 8.2% YoY and 2.7% QoQ to ₹309.65 Cr, with total income of ₹311.38 Cr landing almost exactly on our pre-result estimate of ~₹310 Cr. The company remains loss-making, but the scale of improvement — driven far more by the balance sheet than by operations — is the story of the quarter.
Q2 FY-2027 vs prior quarters
Operating profit margin expanded to 41.73% from 35.10% a year ago and EBITDA grew a modest 17.8% YoY to ₹164.61 Cr — both beating the ~35% margin bar flagged in our pre-result preview. The real swing factor sits below the operating line: finance costs fell 55% YoY to ₹191.49 Cr from ₹424.99 Cr, as the balance sheet keeps delevering following FY26's AGR-related relief (a ₹666.70 Cr provision write-back booked as an exceptional gain in the year to March 2026). Neither this quarter nor the year-ago quarter carries any exceptional item, so the 81.6% YoY loss narrowing is a clean, non-adjusted comparison with no one-offs to strip out. Tax expense was nil in both periods.
The stock went into the print at ₹34.92, down 1.2% over the past month of trading.
For context: this is the second-highest quarterly PAT of the last 6 quarters; revenue is at a 6-quarter high.
No formal management guidance or prior concall commentary is on record for this stock, so there is no outlook to grade the print against, and a press release accompanying this filing had not been extracted at the time of this analysis. Street coverage remains thin — no consensus PAT estimate for Q2 FY27 turned up, consistent with the sparse-coverage picture flagged pre-result (HDFC Securities rates the stock Sell with a ₹29.5 fair value; one TipRanks rating is Hold with a ₹57 target). Against our own pre-result expectations (net loss ₹80–100 Cr, income ~₹310 Cr, EBITDA margin ~35%), the quarter beats on the loss and margin lines and lands in-line on revenue. Separately, net worth stayed deeply negative at ₹(18,932.69) Cr as of September 30, 2026, with accumulated losses exceeding paid-up capital and reserves; the results continue to be prepared on a going-concern basis backed by a support letter from the Tata ultimate holding company (Note 1).
