Axis Bank Q2 FY27: consolidated PAT +38.6% YoY on lower provisions, margins compress
Axis Bank's consolidated (Group) net profit for Q2 FY27 (quarter ended September 30, 2026) rose 38.6% YoY to ₹7,704.67 Cr from ₹5,557.51 Cr, while interest earned (revenue) grew 17.9% YoY to ₹38,087.48 Cr. Sequentially, profit was nearly flat (+0.6% QoQ vs ₹7,656.51 Cr in Q1 FY27) even as revenue rose 7.2% QoQ. Standalone PAT, the bank's dominant entity, was ₹7,003.28 Cr (basic EPS ₹22.50), up 37.6% YoY but down ~1.6% QoQ — directionally consistent with the consolidated print, so basis doesn't change the story here. The YoY profit jump is driven far more by lower provisioning than by operating strength. Provisions and contingencies fell ~51.8% YoY and ~24.8% QoQ to ₹1,757.46 Cr (from ₹3,642.55 Cr a year ago and ₹2,337.47 Cr in Q1), while pre-provision operating profit grew just ~8.7% YoY and actually fell ~3.1% QoQ to ₹12,109.11 Cr. The operating margin (operating profit/interest earned) compressed to ~31.8% from 35.2% in Q1 and 34.5% a year ago, because interest expended grew faster (~8.5% QoQ) than interest earned (~7.2% QoQ), squeezing net interest income growth to roughly 5.4% QoQ. Net profit margin held up better on a YoY basis (~16.8% vs ~14.0% a year ago) but slipped from ~17.7% in Q1 — the margin trend is net compressing into this print. The print lands within the ₹7,500–8,200 Cr range flagged in our pre-result preview, and is broadly consistent with the Street debate going in: 49 of 52 analysts rated the stock Buy on strong credit growth (advances +22.7% YoY to ~₹13.85 lakh Cr per the October 5 business update) while flagging 10–15bps of quarterly NIM contraction from rising funding costs — the OPM compression above is that risk materialising. Asset quality improved, with gross NPA at 1.16% (vs 1.46% a year ago) and net NPA at 0.35% (vs 0.44%). Management's prior medium-term guidance — a structural NIM target of 3.80% and advances growth of industry+300bps — cannot be directly checked here since NIM isn't separately disclosed in this filing, though the sequential OPM squeeze signals near-term headwinds to that target; no fresh press release accompanied this filing to cross-check management's own framing of the quarter. The quarter also saw a new CFO onboarded (Sep 28), the resignation of the Group Head of Branch Banking–South (Oct 5), and two new independent directors appointed (Arvind Subramanian, Sep 23; Ananth Narayan G., Oct 16) — governance continuity items that don't bear directly on the numbers. With provisions now running well below year-ago levels, next quarter's headline PAT growth will depend more on whether operating profit (NII plus fee income, net of opex) can reaccelerate, and whether this quarter's OPM compression stabilizes — both tied directly to the bank's own 3.80% NIM target and its 18–24 month cost-to-assets improvement plan.
