Jain Irrigation Signs Biochar Deal for 19,000 Tonnes
Jain Irrigation Systems Limited (JISL) has entered into an agreement with Supercritical, a carbon removal marketplace, for biochar carbon removal credits. The deal covers up to 19,000 tonnes from JISL's industrial biochar facility in Jalgaon, Maharashtra, for the years 2026 and 2027. The facility converts agricultural and food processing residues into biochar, a stable form of carbon that can be locked in soil for centuries. Syngas produced is used to replace fossil fuels in JISL's industrial facilities, and the biochar is utilized as a soil amendment in its downstream agriculture businesses and supplied to farmers. The project is undergoing verification through Puro.earth, with an independent BeZero Carbon rating underway. This agreement adds significant volume to a tight biochar market, as corporate buyers increasingly seek multi-year contracts for high-quality carbon removal solutions.
