Tata Steel Subsidiary Faces Prosecution for Pollution Allegations

Tata Steel Ijmuiden B.V. (TSIJ), a subsidiary of Tata Steel Limited, has been summoned by the Dutch Public Prosecution Office (PPO) for alleged criminal offenses related to pollution at its coke and gas plants in Ijmuiden. The PPO is prosecuting TSIJ for "allowing undercooked coke to occur" and for not reporting it timely. TSIJ disputes the allegations, stating that instances of undercooked coke have been reduced by 98% since 2020, averaging less than 0.011%, and that the plants will be closed as part of the Green Steel Project. The company is reviewing the impact and will present a substantive defense.
