Growth Masks the Fabric Profitability Wall
Revenue surged 15% and profit jumped 244% from a weak base. But the net margin compressed to 1.9%, and the core fabric division is bleeding red. EBITDA beat guidance—yet that's not the real story.
On the surface, RSWM's Q2 looks like a growth story: revenue up 15%, profit up 244%, EBITDA margin beating prior guidance. But the real earnings are thinner, and the fabric division—unprofitable for three straight quarters—is the story the headline number is obscuring.

Where the thin margin came from
Reported profit of ₹25.6 Cr is genuine. But the net margin of 1.9% masks where the money is actually trapped. The synthetic yarn business is humming; EBITDA is up 23% YoY. The trap is the fabric division—denim and knits—which management calls "temporary" but has now been unprofitable for three back-to-back quarters. Why? Yarn prices have jumped ₹60 per kg, polyester is up ₹50, dyes and chemicals are higher. Despite running at 100% utilization, the company can only pass through 25–50% of these increases to customers. The result: denim has no meaningful profit, and blended fabric PBIT is dragging consolidated margins.
What changed since Q1
The Q1 call highlighted a bullish product mix story and three capex projects. This quarter, fabric profitability moved to the foreground. New concerns: Denim margin collapse was not flagged in Q1; now it's three quarters running. Management attributes it to "temporary" input cost inflation and says discussions are underway for next-season pricing. But the timeline for recovery is vague. Firmed timelines: Knitting expansion (₹92 Cr) on track for December (Q4). GreenPET (₹500 Cr capacity) still targets Q1 FY28 for ramp. NDS9 garment JV remains 12+ months away. Strategy clarified: RSWM is stepping away from commodity yarn and fabric and emphasizing value-added segments (premium knits, downstream garments). This is directionally correct but depends on capex execution and yarn/polyester cost normalization—neither guaranteed.
Despite 100% utilization, we are not able to pass on the entire increase in the cost to the customer. So, this is a temporary issue which we are experiencing.
The bull-bear ledger
Revenue growth 14.9% YoY; domestic +16.5%, exports +11.6%; broad-based.
EBITDA margin beat prior 8% guide; achieved 8.7%, up 70 bps QoQ.
Synthetic yarn (core) stable and profitable; cost passthrough working.
Capex projects strategically sound: GreenPET (15% margin target), NDS9 JV (premium), knitting ramp.
Renewable power now 60% of mix (vs mid-20s last year); tracking ₹40 Cr savings.
Denim fabric PBIT negative three quarters; profitability erased by input cost lag.
Net margin only 1.9%; high operational leverage to commodity volatility; no buffer.
Capex projects not yet operational; depreciation and interest burden not yet visible.
H2 guidance soft ('similar or slightly better' vs H1); no committed numeric target.
Export order flow cited as 'challenging' due to geopolitical tensions and apparel slowdowns.
Ranked risks for a holder
Fabric profitability collapse (denim negative PBIT 3 qtrs)
HighDenim/knits are ~26% of revenue; now unprofitable. At 100% utilization but only 25–50% cost passthrough, the business model is broken until either (a) costs normalize, (b) pricing power returns, or (c) capex (Q4 knitting ramp) changes the product mix. Timeline uncertain.
Input cost passthrough lag
HighYarn +₹60/kg, polyester +₹50, dyes/chemicals up. Customers resisting price increases. If external costs don't ease and pricing leverage doesn't improve by H2, margins compress further. Every ₹1 Cr of input cost that gets only 50% passthrough erases ₹0.5 Cr EBITDA.
Capex execution & unproven payoff
Medium₹92 Cr knitting (Q4), ₹500 Cr GreenPET (Q1 FY28), ₹208 Cr NDS9 JV (FY28+) all pre-operational. Depreciation and interest will worsen P&L before projects generate cashflow. GreenPET targets 15% margin; NDS9 benefits 12+ months away. Delays or overruns stress FCF and ROCE.
Export demand uncertainty
MediumGeopolitical tensions (West Asia, Israel-Iran), apparel export slowdowns, US trade uncertainty. Exports ~31% of H1 revenue. Order flow cited as 'challenging.' Contraction would offset domestic growth gains.
Thin net margin offers no buffer
MediumAt 1.9% NPM, any incremental cost shock or demand softness flips EBITDA gains into profit decline. PAT growth of 244% is from a ₹6 Cr base; no structural operational leverage visible. High leverage to commodity volatility.
How the market is positioned
The stock rallied 3.2% on day 1 of the result announcement and 6.7% by day 3—a modest pop that held. Consistent with a mixed read: beat on EBITDA margin guide, but fabric profitability is a known downer, so the market isn't treating this as a breakout. Valuation context matters: RSWM is down 47% from its all-time high of ₹367.7 and sits at ₹195.25, below the 50-day average (₹203.29) but above the 200-day (₹179.12). The 52-week range is ₹119.9–₹240, so the stock is off the lows but well below prior peaks. The drawdown signals either a buying opportunity (if fabric margins recover and capex payoff proves real) or a warning (if input costs stay elevated). Institutional ownership is light: FII has trimmed to 0.97% (down 0.23 points QoQ), while DII sits at 0.52% (up 0.09 points). Promoter ownership steady at 55.69%. Neither foreign nor domestic institutions are aggressively bidding—consistent with a Hold rating.
1 · Denim margin recovery (Q3–Q4 FY27)
Management expects yarn and polyester prices to ease by Q3–Q4. Watch next two results for proof that denim PBIT turns positive. If it doesn't, the cost problem is structural, not temporary.
2 · Knitting capex ramp (Q4 FY27 commissioning)
₹92 Cr expansion on track for December. Watch Q4 results for revenue and EBITDA from 250 MT printing capacity. Gauge whether capex is unlocking margin upside or just adding revenue at thin margins.
3 · GreenPET commissioning (Q1 FY28 expected)
Management targets ₹200 Cr incremental revenue at 15% EBITDA margin (₹30 Cr EBITDA). This is the bull case lynchpin. Watch for delay announcements or guidance trimming; any slip signals execution risk.
4 · H2 EBITDA margin vs. guidance
H1 EBITDA margin was 8.4%. Management said H2 'similar or slightly better'—an estimate, not a committed target. If H2 prints at 8.4–8.6%, turnaround narrative validates. Below 8.4% means margin pressure continuing.
RSWM is in the midst of a capex-driven transition from commodity yarn/fabric to value-added segments and downstream partnerships. Revenue growth is real and broad-based. But this quarter reveals margins are under structural pressure: fabric profitability is broken, input costs rising faster than customer passthrough, and net margin collapsed to 1.9%.
The stock's 47% drawdown and light institutional ownership suggest the market is waiting for proof. That proof will come from: (1) denim margin recovery as external costs ease (Q3–Q4), (2) knitting capex ramp delivering margin uplift in Q4, and (3) GreenPET coming online at or above 15% margin target in Q1 FY28.
Until then, this is a hold. Strategy is sound, but tactical margin pressure is real. Watch denim PBIT recovery as the single most important metric. If it doesn't turn positive by Q4, the story is a step-down, not a step-up.
