board meeting convened

On Sunday, October 18, JSW Steel informed the exchanges that the Orissa High Court has ruled on both of the dispatch-shortfall demands hanging over its Jajang Iron Ore Block in Keonjhar district, Odisha. The two demands — ₹6,96,32,09,199, i.e. ₹696.32 crore, for Year 1 of the Mine Development and Production Agreement, and ₹14,72,69,47,420, i.e. ₹1,472.69 crore, for Year 5 — together total ₹2,169.02 crore. Both judgments were pronounced on October 16; the company said the two-day gap before disclosure was the time taken to review the judgments.

Orissa High Court rules on both Jajang dispatch-shortfall demands

The High Court of Orissa at Cuttack pronounced judgments on October 16 in JSW Steel's two writ petitions against demands raised by the Odisha mines authorities for shortfall in dispatch of minerals from the Jajang Iron Ore Block under Rule 12-A of the Minerals (Other than Atomic and Hydro Carbons Energy Minerals) Concession Rules, 2016. The Year-1 petition was disposed of in terms of the court's April 20, 2026 judgment in a batch of similar matters; the Year-5 demand letter was set aside, with the matter remitted to the authority to decide afresh.

Read:A combined ₹2,169.02 crore of disputed demands — roughly 0.7% of market cap — is no longer live in its original form. But the two outcomes are not equivalent: the company reads the Year-1 demand as quashed, while the Year-5 matter goes back to the same authority for a fresh decision under the legal position the court laid down in April.

BSE filing, Oct 18, 2026

The Year-1 demand dates to September 6, 2021, when the Office of the Joint Director of Mines, Joda raised ₹696.32 crore (with a corrigendum the next day) for the dispatch shortfall in the agreement's first year, June 27, 2020 to June 26, 2021. JSW Steel challenged it in Writ Petition (Civil) No. 28232 of 2021 seeking quashing of the demand letter. The court disposed of that petition in terms of its April 20, 2026 judgment in WP(Civil) 31035 of 2025 and other batch matters — the filing does not reproduce the operative language, but states the company's reading of it:

The filing's exact words on the Year-1 demand
In view of the conclusions and directions contained in its order, the Company believes that the Demand Letter dated September 6, 2021, read with the corrigendum dated September 7, 2021, issued by the Office of the Joint Director of Mines, Joda, stands quashed.

— JSW Steel, intimation to BSE under Regulation 30, October 18, 2026

The Year-5 demand is larger and its outcome is more conditional. On August 21, 2025, the Office of the Deputy Director of Mines, Joda raised ₹1,472.69 crore for the shortfall in the fifth agreement year, June 27, 2024 to June 26, 2025; the company challenged it in Writ Petition (Civil) No. 23792 of 2025. Here the High Court set aside the demand letter — but also remitted the matter to the authority to decide afresh, keeping in view the legal position in the same April 20, 2026 judgment. The demand letter is gone; the underlying question is not. Whether a fresh assessment is made, and at what amount, is not knowable from this disclosure.

For scale — computed from the company's own disclosures — the combined ₹2,169.02 crore is about 0.7% of JSW Steel's ≈₹2,97,441 crore market capitalisation (244.55 crore shares × the ₹1,216.30 close of October 16), and about 46% of the ₹4,696 crore consolidated net profit the company reported for Q1 FY27 alone. Material enough to have been worth litigating for five years; not large enough to move the balance sheet's trajectory either way.

The tape

The disclosure landed on a weekend — the market has not priced it yet

The stock had drifted from its 52-week adjusted high of ₹1,351 (August 27) to ₹1,168 on October 9, then recovered about 4% over the following week to close at ₹1,216.30 on October 16 — up +1.3% on the day the judgments were pronounced, on 5.05 million shares, the heaviest daily volume since August 27. A timing caveat matters here: the company's disclosure reached the exchange only at 12:27 IST on Sunday, October 18 — two days after the Friday, October 16 ruling — so the October 16 move cannot be attributed to the filing, and the first session in which holders can actually trade on the disclosed outcome had not yet occurred as of this report. Whether a repricing follows is a next-session question.

What to watch

The next data points

  • Year-5, decided afresh

The matter is remitted to the mining authority. Any fresh demand — its timing and quantum under the April 20, 2026 legal position — is the open variable in the ₹1,472.69 Cr leg.

  • Year-1 finality

"Stands quashed" is the company's stated reading of the disposal, not quoted operative language. Any further communication from the mines office, or an appeal, would test it.

  • Q2 FY27 results, Oct 23

The board meets Friday, October 23 to consider results for the quarter and half-year ended September 30, 2026 — the first results disclosure after the judgments, and the next scheduled look at how the company presents the Jajang matter.

  • The first tradeable session

The disclosure landed on a non-trading day. The first session after it is the market's first chance to price the outcome — against a stock already +4% off its October 9 close.

The net of the two judgments: ₹2,169.02 crore of demands that had sat over the Jajang block since 2021 and 2025 are no longer live in their original form. The Year-1 demand of ₹696.32 crore is, on the company's reading, quashed. The Year-5 demand of ₹1,472.69 crore is set aside but goes back to the same authority for a fresh decision — a resolution of the letter, not necessarily of the liability.

The data suggests the overhang has receded rather than vanished. How much of it the market had priced in — and how much comes back if the authority reassesses Year 5 — are questions the next session and the October 23 results disclosure will begin to answer.
