Momentum Check: Can Growth Offset Capex Drag?
Shyam Metalics reports Q2 FY27 (31 Oct) against a 26% volume surge and a ₹50k Cr greenfield bet. The Street is bullish on trajectory—both Goldman Sachs and Jefferies raised targets recently—but the real test is whether margin durability survives the capital cycle.
The Setup: Volume Surge Meets Capex Reality
Shyam Metalics enters Q2 FY27 results on momentum. In September 2026, consolidated sales volume climbed 26% year-on-year to 1.5 million tonnes—and here's the kicker: revenue for the month jumped nearly 40%, signaling realization gains on top of volume. Stainless steel, the company's flagship, posted 35% YoY volume growth in September with realizations up 36%. This isn't just volume play; the mix and pricing are working. The Street has taken notice—Goldman Sachs raised its target to ₹1,120 from ₹1,050 in recent weeks, and Jefferies bumped its call to ₹1,250 from ₹1,150. The consensus target sits at ₹1,162 versus the current ₹1,131.

32% YoY growth expected across the year; 9-analyst consensus
A strong Q2 would see consolidated volume growth >26%, revenue growth at or above 40%, and EBITDA margins holding near Q1 levels (or expanding) despite the start of the capex cycle. Realization growth continuing would be the cherry on top. A weak Q2 would show volume growth below 20%, revenue growth stalling below 30%, and margin compression beyond 50 basis points—a sign that integration drag and capex outlays are hitting harder than priced in.
On Track with Guidance?
Shyam Metalics has not published a formal full-year revenue or profit guidance for FY27 in the filings we've reviewed, but the analyst consensus (₹231.1b revenue, 32% EPS growth YoY) and the run-rate data suggest the company is broadly tracking upside to expectations. The September sales data (40% revenue growth on 26% volume) show momentum that exceeds simple volume recovery—this is a mix/pricing story. The question is whether this holds through the year as capex cycles in. The NCLT-approved subsidiary merger (Shree Venkateshwara Electrocast) and the recently sealed Phutamura coal-block backward-integration deal signal confidence in execution, but they also imply cost absorption ahead.
What the Street Says
What's Changed Since Last Quarter
1 · ₹50k Cr Maharashtra MoU (5 Oct 2026)
Shyam Metalics signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Government of Maharashtra to build a 9 MTPA integrated greenfield steel complex in Chandrapur. This is a major capex commitment—transformational for scale, but near-term margin headwind. No formal FY27 capex guidance disclosed yet; this will likely dominate the Q2 call.
2 · NCLT-Approved Subsidiary Merger (23 Oct 2026)
The National Company Law Tribunal sanctioned the amalgamation of Shree Venkateshwara Electrocast Pvt Ltd into Shyam Sel & Power (a SMEL subsidiary). Routine consolidation move; integration costs likely minor relative to the Maharashtra project but worth monitoring for any one-time charges.
3 · Backward Integration: Phutamura Coal Block (13 Oct 2026)
Shyam Metalics secured mining rights for the Phutamura Coal Block (Chhattisgarh, 7.324 sq km, ~170M tonnes estimated reserves) via investment in Alom Solar Pvt Ltd. Lowers future fuel costs for the integrated complex, but capex for mine development adds to the cycle.
4 · Stainless Steel Sales Momentum (6 Oct 2026)
September 2026: Stainless steel volume +35% YoY; realization +36% YoY. This is the most recent operational data before Q2 close. Validates the 40% revenue growth story. No demand softness signaled; if anything, pricing/mix are holding.
5 · ESG Ratings (16 & 3 Sep 2026)
CRISIL assigned ESG rating of 53; ESG Risk Assessments rated 48. Standard voluntary disclosures; no material operational signal.
What to Watch on Result Day
1. Margins under pressure? The key watch is EBITDA/profit margin trajectory. Q1 baseline, Q2 movement, and any commentary on capex acceleration in H2. If margins hold or expand, the stock likely re-rates. If they compress >100 bps, it signals cost inflation or capex drag proving worse than expected. 2. Maharashtra project timeline & capex guidance. The ₹50k Cr MoU is transformational but still a non-binding framework. The board approval and capex phasing for FY27–FY29 will set the tone for the next cycle. Any vagueness will invite caution from the Street. 3. Realisation sustainability. September's 36% realization growth is eye-watering. Is it a seasonal spike, a one-off mix event, or a durable shift in product/customer mix? Q2 data will answer this. If realization moderates sharply, growth expectations reset lower. 4. Subsidiary integration & coal-block updates. Management commentary on the Electrocast merger and coal-block development timeline (mine capex, production ramp) will matter for FY28+ earnings visibility.
Shyam Metalics is a momentum stock with momentum: volume growing 26%+, realization surging, and a decade-long India metals supercycle narrative intact. The ₹50k Cr Maharashtra greenfield is proof of ambition, and the Street—Goldman and Jefferies in the lead—is pricing in execution. The preview is straightforward: can the company deliver margin durability (or even expansion) as capex cycles in? September's data suggest yes (realization tailwinds trump volume leverage), but Q2 will be the acid test. The consensus target (₹1,162) leaves ~3% upside; a beat on margin guidance or a clear, credible capex timeline could trigger multiple expansion. Conversely, margin compression >100 bps or capex uncertainty could trigger a 5–8% pull-back. Execution on the Maharashtra project is the multi-year frame; Q2 is the first chapter of that story.

Shyam Metalics' consolidated PAT came in at ₹510.99 Cr (owners' share ₹493.35 Cr) for Q2 FY27, up 96.2% YoY and 45.7% QoQ, on revenue from operations of ₹5,960.19 Cr (+33.7% YoY, +9.3% QoQ). YoY is the primary read here, and on that basis the headline PAT number is flattered: effective 1 July 2026 the company switched its depreciation method from Written Down Value to Straight-Line, cutting consolidated Q2 D&A by ₹171.77 Cr versus what the old method would have charged. Stripping that one-off out, adjusted PAT growth is closer to ~45% YoY (~8% QoQ) — still strong, but roughly half the reported figure. The underlying operating print, which isn't touched by the depreciation change, was genuinely solid: EBITDA rose 40.9% YoY to ₹857.17 Cr, with OPM (EBITDA ex-other income/revenue) expanding to 13.81% from 12.10% a year ago, though it eased slightly from 14.03% last quarter.
Q2 FY-2027 vs prior quarters
Revenue growth was volume-led — company data shows 26% YoY volume growth for the quarter, matching the volume target embedded in management's FY27 guidance (20%+ EBITDA growth on a 25% volume target). H1 FY27 EBITDA of ₹1,669.55 Cr is up 34.5% YoY, running ahead of that 20%+ guidance, so the quarter is tracking on or ahead of plan on an operating basis even after backing out the depreciation tailwind. Consolidated and standalone results diverge sharply, however: standalone revenue grew just 13.2% YoY to ₹1,894.77 Cr and standalone PAT 46.1% YoY to ₹198.13 Cr, both well below the group numbers — the bulk of this quarter's growth is coming from subsidiaries and JVs, not the parent entity, so readers comparing the standalone print will see a materially slower-growing company.
The stock went into the print at ₹1,162.9, up 8.1% over the past month of trading.
For context: this is the highest quarterly PAT in the last 6 quarters on our records; PAT has now risen for 3 consecutive quarters; revenue is at a 6-quarter high.

FY27: ₹20%+ EBITDA growth (vs ₹25% volume target); capex ₹9,580 Cr over 3–4 years (internal accruals). By 2031: flat products ₹1.7–1.8 Mt, stainless ₹600–700 Cr run-rate, 14–15% EBITDA margin, 600–700 bps ROE/ROIC improvement.
— This quarter: beat
Our pre-result preview had flagged ~26% volume growth and 35–40% revenue growth YoY as the bar, alongside Street consensus (Goldman Sachs Buy, target ₹1,120; Jefferies Buy, target ₹1,250) framing this as a volume story with execution risk around the Maharashtra greenfield plant. The print lands essentially in line: volume growth matched the 26% watch figure exactly, while revenue growth of 33.7% YoY came in just under the lower end of the expected 35–40% band. Nuvama's pre-quarter caution that steel profitability would soften in Q2 amid lower market prices showed up mildly in the sequential OPM dip (14.03%→13.81%) even as YoY margins still expanded. On corporate developments, the board on 31 October approved the Alom Solar acquisition (51% stake, SMEL's ₹183.6 Cr share of a ₹360 Cr capex budget) for the Phutamura coal block backward-integration project, alongside the previously NCLT-approved subsidiary merger and the induction of an LIC nominee director — none of which are yet reflected in this quarter's numbers.

Depreciation method changed WDV→SLM effective 1 Jul 2026, cutting consolidated Q2 D&A by ₹171.77 Cr (standalone ₹41.89 Cr) — a non-comparable one-off that flatters reported PAT; adjusted, YoY PAT growth is ~45% vs 96% reported. Note (v): ED issued a PMLA provisional attachment on ₹152.48 Cr of subsidiary Shyam SEL & Power's investments (coal-sourcing probe); company contests it and sees no impact on operations/financials. No exceptional items otherwise.
