Associated Alcohols & Breweries: FSSAI bans sale of one whiskey & rum brand

Associated Alcohols & Breweries Ltd (AABL) has received a communication from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) prohibiting the sale of one of its whiskey and rum brands. The regulatory action, dated July 29, 2026, is based on the declaration of "artificial flavour" on the label, which FSSAI deems non-compliant with the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. AABL, advised by its legal counsel, believes the action is unjustified, stating that its labeling practices conform to long-standing industry norms and legal provisions. The company is approaching the Hon'ble High Court for immediate intervention. AABL notes that similar actions have been initiated by FSSAI pan-India, and industry bodies like CIABC and ISWAI are engaging FSSAI on this matter. The company is currently assessing the operational and financial impact of this regulatory action.
