Supreme Court Reviews EC Order, OMDC Mine Proposal Restored
The Hon'ble Supreme Court of India, in a review order dated 29.07.2026, has altered its previous judgment concerning environmental clearances (ECs). The new order validates ECs granted under the 2017 Notification and 2021 OM until the date of the order, provided they are not challenged on merits. Pending applications are to be processed, and those dismissed or delisted solely due to the previous judgment may be reconsidered. However, no fresh applications under these instruments will be entertained. Consequently, Orissa Minerals Development Company Ltd (OMDC)'s proposal for an EC for its Belkundi Iron and Mn. Mines has been restored to its pre-delisting stage for reconsideration. Notably, MoEF&CC had already recommended favourably for the EC on 28.07.2026, subject to the outcome of the Supreme Court's judgment.
