Tata Steel Writ Petition Restored by Bombay High Court

Tata Steel Ltd's writ petition challenging a tax reassessment order for AY2019-20 has been restored by the Hon'ble High Court of Bombay. The original order, which reassessed taxable income by the amount of debt waived (₹25,185.51 crore), was initially set aside on technical grounds. However, a retrospective amendment to the Finance Act, 2026, empowered Jurisdictional Assessing Officers to issue such notices. The High Court has now listed the restored petition for hearing on August 19, 2026, and granted Tata Steel liberty to challenge the constitutional validity of the retrospective amendment. The company remains confident in its case on merits and technical infirmities.
